The Making of Umami Mermaids (2018)
After getting the go ahead in April 2018 I began making anything and everything I thought would be part of this production. While writing the three stories to be told… in rhyme. I wanted each puppet to have a little surprise, like having their guts drain from their foot, their heart pop through their ribs, their foot break all their teeth, you know the usual.
This photo is of the suitcase I took into Brisbane Festival to pitch the concept.

Puppet maker and puppeteer
Snoopy was commissioned by White Rabbit Theatre for Agnes and Earl roving performance at Festival 2018 which ran along side the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. Snoopy and his puppeteer Ainslee convinced many punters that he was a very good boy.

Artist
Artistic Director Lisa Smith gave me so many opportunities over the years, making puppets and painting the poster for this original work of children’s theatre. It was surreal to see if projected onto the giant screen outside HOTA.

Puppet Maker
Baby phoenixes; My first attempt at casting and moulding with silicon from a polymer clay sculpture. Painted with acrylic paint. Hollow to use as a finger puppet. Naked to convince he’s freshly burnt, and not just because I left the original in the oven too long.

Illustrator
Justin Harrison created the incredible digital landscapes and I sketched them as if I were the naturalist Charles Darwin. My handwriting was turned into a font and the illustrations were brought to life as if sketched in real time across a giant sail at the back of the stage. Justin and I won Best Audio Visual Design at the Matilda Awards the following year.

Artist
Spent one month in the Queensland Theatre workshop painting every puppet from The Wider Earth. They went on to perform in London and were shown to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Some would say they were quite wooden, the puppets, not the Royals.

Not puppets but my dive back into portrait painting after many years of not… portrait… painting.
